Continuing Education: Materials & Toxicity

“Babies and small children learn through sensory interaction and stimulation,” says Carol Gretter, principal at New York–based Eleven of Eleven Architecture, the project’s designer. Little ones touch, taste, smell, and feel everything, and “these intimate interactions require materials that are strong, safe, and cleanable,” says Gretter. “We design inspirational learning spaces by balancing these physical qualities with visual harmony.”

Corporate Childcare Provider Vivvi Plans First Preschool at One Hudson Square

Carol Gretter of Eleven of Eleven Architecture designed the school, which has 20-foot ceilings, large windows and a layout that allows natural light to reach the interior rooms.

“Our curriculum informed the design of the space,” explained Charles Bonello, Vivvi’s co-founder and CEO. “We developed our own inquiry-based curriculum where they’re able to find their own answers to questions they have. Teachers [try to focus on] whatever kids are interested in right now. Let’s say it’s transportation—they’re reading books about cars, building cars out of blocks, or baking car cookies.”

Employer-sponsored daycare arrives in Hudson Square

The buildout and design process was led by Carol Gretter of Eleven of Eleven Architecture.

“When searching for a home for Vivvi’s flagship campus, Hudson Square emerged as a clear winner not only because of its accessibility and the remarkable space, but because of the world-leading companies that call the area home, and the support of Trinity and Hines and the rest of the community,” said Ben Newton, Vivvi’s co-founder and COO. “We are already overwhelmed by the positive response from employers, parents, and neighbors, and are looking forward to helping to build the community together.”
